Governance, Leadership,
& Health Financing

We are committed to enhancing the resilience and sustainability of Zanzibar’s health system by focusing on governance, leadership, and health financing. Our approach involves providing:

  • Technical assistance
  • Financial support
  • Close collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

Our technical assistance includes active participation in governance platforms and the secondment of staff to the Ministry of Health.

This year, 29 community engagement events were held, plus radio and TV broadcasts to promote health awareness.

HIPZ also participated in 18 national health policy platforms and events.

  • Through our Maternal Newborn and Child Health project, we have partnered with the Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency to strengthen leadership and management within Zanzibar’s health facilities, which is crucial for improving services and preparing for the roll-out of facility-based financing.
  • We also participate in the Zanzibar Multisectoral Coordinating Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance and represent international NGOs on the Zanzibar Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanism, overseeing efforts targeting HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria, and the COVID response.
  • Finally, we contribute to health financing through the Zanzibar Health Basket Fund, which aims to strengthen primary healthcare across the region.

106 health managers were trained in planning, coordination, and financial management.
