Elective Student Programme

HIPZ’s Medical Electives Programme, which began in 2011, allows students to:

enhance their clinical skills, whilst fostering a deeper understanding of global health challenges.

Since its inception, we have proudly hosted elective students from the UK,  Europe and North America, offering them unique and transformative experiences.

DIVERSITY OF WORK

HIPZ offers a rich diversity of work across the islands of Unguja and Pemba in the Zanzibar archipelago. As an elective student, you will be supporting over 140 healthcare facilities and engaging in a wide array of community projects.

Our programme ensures that you are not just observers but active participants, deeply immersed in the local healthcare landscape. Whether your specialisation is in physiotherapy, midwifery, nursery, or another field, we are here to help you tailor your elective programme so you can get the most out of the experience.

PASTORAL CARE

Pastoral care is very important to us, and we will guide you every step of the way, from your initial application to the completion of your elective.

We know it can be a far distance to come and a foreign place to be, but our dedicated team in Zanzibar is ready to welcome and support you throughout your stay, ensuring you have a rewarding and safe experience.

ZANZIBAR

Zanzibar is an extraordinary destination, offering a perfect blend of work and leisure. You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a vibrant new culture, learn a new language (we provide you weekly Swahili lessons), and adapt to an environment that will push you out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s exploring spice farms, engaging with local communities, or simply relaxing on the white sandy shores, Zanzibar is a fantastic place to be.
